Schwinn 220 Recumbent Bike Review – a great exercise bike at a discounted price!

I did the research to purchase my recumbent exercise bike. I am getting ready for my new year’s resolution. To loose 40 pounds this coming year. OK maybe 30, but loose I will. I figure I can not be the only one planning to loose weight or get in shape or increase my heart rate. So I decided to pass what I learned forward. If it can be of use to you, that’s great. This is what I found:

What to look for when choosing your exercise bike?

Some call it an exercise bike, others a stationary bike, same thing. The features to look for are:

  • Comfort, the type of seating and posture Upright or Recumbent
  • The type display console
  • Built-in Heart Rate Monitor
  • Built-in Workout Programs
  • Type of Resistance System
  • Flywheel Technology
  • Physical Dimensions
  • Price
  • Warranty

How comfortable do you want to be?

There are two basic types of bikes Upright and Recumbent. The Upright exercise bikes give you the feel of riding an actual bicycle with the pedals down and no back support. If you plan to ride it for a long while, that is something to consider. The Recumbent bike puts you in a more relaxed position with your feet extended forward and your back supported.

For me the best is the recumbent exercise bike like the Schwinn 220 Recumbent Exercise Bike. Its seat is padded and adjusts in the fore/aft positions to accommodate a variety of positions. With a recumbent bike, you can be riding your bike while reading or watching TV, you are safely seated and supported, no balancing required. Another feature in this particular model is a “step-through” design. That means you don’t have to jump over it to seat in it, which makes it safer and more comfortable for using it at any age.

The Display Console

The LCD panel on this bike is easy to read and provides useful information for tracking purposes. It measures the time spent exercising, the distance “traveled”, the cycling speed, pulse, watts, resistance, the calories burned and the heart rate.

Heart Rate Monitor

This is an important feature for any exercise bike. In this particular bike, the grip has the heart rate sensor built in. All you have to do is place your hands on the grips and the LCD display begins to show your heart rate read out as well as your pulse. Great information since one of the many benefits of cycling is to increase the heart rate and maintain it at a certain level for periods of time depending on your workout style.

Workout Programs

This bike has 12 built in workout programs. That means that you can either choose to simply pedal and increase or decrease the bike’s resistance manually or follow a pre-designed workout program. The programs guide your pedaling speed and adjust the resistance of the pedals to make it easier or harder during specific intervals. This creates the feeling of riding in a terrain where such adjustments normally take place.

Resistance System

The Schwinn 220 uses the Magnetic Eddy Current Brake or ECB system. This technology works electromagnetically using an aluminum disk spinning between variable magnetic fields. The system has very few moving parts making it very reliable and durable. The ECB provides a smooth and quiet brake technology.

Perimeter weighted flywheel

This is what provides a true road feel and consistent workouts. The flywheel is a mechanical device that stores the rotational energy of the system. By resisting changes in rotational speed and by its weight, the flywheel smooths the pulses of power caused by pedaling. The ECB system with weighted flywheel contributes to a smooth and quiet ride.

Physical dimensions

This bike does not take a lot of space at 56 x 25 x 38 inches (LxWxH) it weighs 97 pounds (remember free shipping at Amazon!) and can be used by anyone weighing up to 300 pounds . It comes with over-sized stabilizers and levelers that are built-in for a solid platform. It also has transport wheels for ease of placement in the designated space.

How much should you pay for all these features? And Where can you get this bike?

Like most these days, I am trying to save money. So I look for the best buys online. The list price for the Schwinn 220 Recumbent Bike is $499 but Amazon sells it for under $375 and currently includes FREE Shipping.

What type of Warranty is included?

The bike comes with a manufacturer warranty of 5 years on the frame, 1 year on mechanical and electric and 3 months on wear parts.
